VBS for Ten

Hey guys, I need your help. Our church apparently has a sad VBS. Last year, we had 10 kids. Seriously. And our church is a decent size. We have more kids than that for Sunday kid's service! Sarah said that the Sarcoxie VBS had about 50. SARCOXIE!

Anyway, I need your ideas: what worked, what didn't. Everything you remember. Things you liked, why you went, who it serves, what it should be like, EVERYTHING. I need all your thoughts.

Either post them or email me directly. The church's goal for this year is 60 kids (it's the 60th anniversary for the VBS). I need your help!!!

I remember story times about jonah, about the plagues, arts and craft that I got to take home, food, sing along songs with actions like father abraham...that's all I remember from that big church's VBS...

awww that is sad! even the korean church joined forces with other minority churches and a smaller church to have 70 kids. wow. I've only worked in poorer neighborhoods where we go out and ask the local kids to come and play and have snacks-- I don't know what your neighborhood situation is like.

I liked the crafts to take home because i had a sense of ownership. I liked the action songs. I remember the pastor having a contest on bringing in other friends.. or pennies or something.. and if we got enough, we'd shave his head or do something silly to him.

will there be a banner outside of the church stating the theme/date/times? I don't know if that even helps-- update us! when is it?

The VBS is will be the last week of July/first week of August. Here's the kicker: VBS is at 9AM!!! Apparently, people don't get home until after 7:00 here, and by then it's too late to bring kids to VBS. What do you think???

So, what I get is that arts & crafts, food, fun songs, and competitions are good to bring up the spirit.

Also, we should look into joining forces with other churches and/or ask kids to come and play and have snacks. How did you ask these kids? Did you just go door to door, or what? Our neighborhood is pretty nice...

Having a banner is a great idea. We are right near a major road and it would get a LOT of exposure.

They both pretty much covered what I liked about VBS as well. Maybe you could even possibly do some camp-type stuff such as families (groups/teams) and competitive games (races/obstacle courses/etc). You seem to make more friends (thus have more fun) when you are working as a team. Nice weather would be a great plus to do most of those activities.

well, the neighborhood that I walked around was pretty trashy- so there were kids out everywhere and there were toys scattered throughout the yard-- so it was pretty easy to figure out which houses had kids. I know it will be different from yours! How big is the team that is putting VBS together?

sorry- i don't get your first question?

my first question is that the VBS starts at 9:00 am. You don't think that's weird???

And we don't know how big the team that is putting VBS together is yet. The first meeting is next week, so I can tell you then.

wow-- yes, 9am is an odd time. I always remember it in the evening- and even then, having transportation provided by the church. wow. 9am until noon then? maybe that's why you only have 10 people?
